While financial stress, intimacy issues, and infidelity are common reasons couples seek counseling, relationship researchers generally point to a deeper root cause for marital failure: poor communication, and specifically, the presence of contempt.
According to the Gottman Institute, there are four negative communication styles that can accurately predict the end of a relationship, often referred to as "The Four Horsemen":
Recognizing these negative patterns is the first step toward repairing the relationship.
I work with couples to actively shift out of contempt-based cycles and into a more intentional culture of appreciation and emotional safety. One of the primary interventions I use is helping partners learn to "track" and name moments of goodwill in real time, so the nervous system begins to register connection more readily than threat. I also incorporate structured appreciation practices, such as brief daily acknowledgments that are specific, behavior-based, and emotionally honest, to interrupt negative filtering and rebuild a more balanced relational narrative. Over time, these small but consistent shifts help replace criticism and withdrawal with curiosity, respect, and felt recognition.
